FIRST BASE

Athletic Starting Position

The first baseman starts in an athletic position with her hips and shoulders square to the ball and both legs well flexed. The balls of her throwing hand foot is on the inside of the base. Her glove foot is close to the base pointing towards the defensive player with the ball. Her glove is open giving a target. Both arms are flexed in a position to react to the ball.

Backhand Digs

The first baseman extends her glove foot towards the ball with her leg flexed. With the ball outside the foot, the glove is low and opened towards the ball. The glove arm is flexed as the elbow moves the glove upward to field the ball off the dirt. The throwing hand foot remains on the base. Her chin is down following the ball into the glove.

Extension To The Ball

The first baseman gets extension towards the ball. With her throwing foot still on the base, she extends her glove and glove foot to the ball. She remains in a low athletic position with her hips and shoulders square to the ball.

Full Extension/Catch

The first baseman gets full extension upon receiving the throw. With her throwing foot still on the base, she extends her glove to full extension. Her glove foot is extended out towards the ball with a slight flex for balance. She remains in an low athletic position with her hips and shoulders square to the ball.

Backhand Catches

The first baseman extends her glove foot towards the ball with her leg flexed. With the ball outside the foot, the glove hand thumb rotates to the down position to open the glove up to the ball. The glove arm extends out as far as possible to catch the ball.  The throwing hand foot remains on the base. Her chin is down following the ball into the glove.

The first baseman steps with her glove foot towards the ball with her leg flexed. With the ball outside the foot, the glove is low and opened towards the ball. The glove arm is flexed as the elbow moves the glove upward to field the ball off the dirt. The throwing hand foot remains on the base. Her chin is down following the ball into the glove.

Forehand Catches

The first baseman extends her glove foot as far as she can towards the ball with her leg flexe while maintaining contact with the base with her throwing foot. The glove arm extends out as far as possible to catch the ball. Her chin is down following the ball into the glove.
